Women and World War II As in every war, some spies and resistance fighters were women. Besides the obvious ability of women to use sexual favors and blackmail to get secrets, the image of women s purity and morality worked against suspicion of women. Mildred Gillars, American born, worked for Radio Berlin during the war as an actress and announcer, broadcasting a show called "Home Sweet Home" aimed at American soldiers. Her May 11, 1944, broadcast against D Day earned her a conviction for treason in the US after the defeat of Germany. Tokyo Rose really a name for a number of women on Japanese radio similarly broadcast to American servicemen. The woman convicted as Tokyo Rose, the only one of the announcers with US citizenship, used "Orphan Ann" as her pseudonym and was eventually pardoned because it was clear that she was forced to make the broadcasts and had intentionally made them ridiculous. Gender did not make one more or less likely to be patriotic. In Europe, many women in nations occupied by the Axis were collaborators with the occupiers; others worked in the resistance or underground. Women often were less likely to be targets of suspicion, and so had opportunities for success in the resistance that male members did not always have. Claude Cahun and Suzanne Malherbe published resistance flyers from their home in the Channel Islands, occupied by the Germans. They often dressed in male clothing to move about and distribute their flyers. They were arrested Black Moncler Vest near the end of the war and sentenced to death, but the Germans did not carry out the sentence. Coco Chanel s affair with a Nazi officer in Paris cost her in popularity until a comeback in 1954, after a self imposed exile to Switzerland. Unlike World War I, in which some British and American women s suffragists were also pacifists, there were few pacifists in Allied countries during World War II. A notable pacifist was Jeannette Rankin, who was the only person in Congress to vote against the US entering both World War I and World War II. She cast her vote Moncler Puffer Jacket in 1941 against American entry, saying "As a woman I can t go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else." In America, a number of women were leading pro Nazi voices. Laura Ingalls (not the same person as Laura Ingalls Wilder) was involved with America First. Cathrine Curtis Moncler Marmelade Womens Coats Belt Fur Collar Coffee is associated with the Women s National Committee to Keep the US Out of War. Agnes Walters worked with the National Blue Star Mothers of America, and the name was easily confused with the patriotic group, Blue Star Mothers. Lois de Lafayette Washburn founded the American Gentile Protective Association. The Mother s Movement capitalized on the sentimental attitude towards mothers. This anti Semitic and pro Nazi group was made up of many organizations in different states, and included the National League of Mothers of America and We the Mothers, Mobilize for America. Elizabeth Dilling wrote books and a newsletter opposing American involvement in the war.

Women s Basketball Very, very annoying but I will say this: Last year we went to the semi s as they were only on ESPNU and last year the ticket was for both semis so we got to see the great West Virginia win over Rutgers. The crowd went crazy; later the WestVirgina coach wrote a letter to the Courant thanking the crowd for the great support they got. Well don t you know, CPTV gets shut out of the post season, Time Warner RCN (NYC cable monopolies) refuse to carry ESPNU, CSTV or the NFL Network to boot. Just checked the Yahoo TV listings for ESPN for this evening and they list (2) womens game at 5:00 and 7:00PM (there isn t even a 5:00 game scheduled to be played, anywhere). ESPN has such woeful disregard for womens hoops that they won t even commit on their website to which games they WILL actually televise, yet they ll commit to an insignificant mens regular season game between Boise State and Pepperdine!!! When will they wake up and really get the popularity of womens hoops. Haven t the epic UConn/Tennessee matches been the most highly viewed games in their broadcast history, mens or womens? It was a decision made by ESPN, not the Big East and certainly not UConn. ESPN bought the contract, so they can do whatever they want with it. And they realized that it was a great chance to get people to order ESPNU, so they took it. They did the same thing with ESPN2 in its infancy. And look at how successful that was ESPN2 is on every cable provider and is more or less equal to ESPN. ESPN is glad people are annoyed, otherwise no one would call their cable providers to get ESPNU. It is disappointing that ESPN would use it as a pawn for their gain, but I wouldn t be surprised if it worked. I just found it funny that instead of showing the Big East tournament they showed a Busch Series race IN SPANISH on ESPN and ESPN Deportes. I ve been watching the NFL for 40 years, and thanked the Lord the day ESPN was born in little old Bristol, CT. I cannot begin to express my visceral contempt now for both organizations. Each built their unique success on the relationships they nurtured with the sports loving public by doing a great job of giving the fans what they craved and by putting those same fans first. They are no better then the cable companies they now strong arm to show their programs (NFL Network ESPNU, etc.). I realize they have share holders to answer to, but there wouldn t be shareholders to answer to if not for the fan base those companies were built upon. Now the fans being ignored and punished are deemed an acceptable level of collateral damage in their quest for world domination. Thanks very little, they took a perfect relationship and turned it into complete contempt. An on line search showed that one or more of the satellite providers did offer this option. The Courant seemed to indicate that Cox Cable which serves part of CT also had the service. (I could not confirm that claim). I then searched for sports bars in my area. A web site showed a "Sliders" in Berlin and Plainville. A call to the Berlin site confirmed access and that most of the screens in the place would be tuned to the game. We watched the game with other fans and had an enjoyable evening. There was cost for food which was much better than average as was Saks Moncler Men the service. Thank you Sliders. We really don t care if COMCAST expands its ESPN options. In general, I continue to be disappointed by the overall coverage given to women s basketball. Yes, it is better than it used to be (except, of course, televising most of the Big East on ESPNU!). I am so tired of being able to find men s basketball on 4 or 5 stations at the same time occasionally, 1 station of 1 or 2 women s games. I don t begrudge the men s teams of their coverage but I would like to watch more women s basketball. The Big East wants more people interested in the women s games yet agrees to a contract with a TV station to which most people do not have access. Well, doesn t that make a lot of sense?! The Big East didn t agree on a contract with ESPNU, Judy. They agreed with ESPN, who then put the game on their ESPNU channel. I just wanted to clear that up. It was a strategic business decision as I, and others, Moncler Stores have pointed out. And since it worked well with ESPN2, they are trying it again. So yes, it does make sense from ESPN s standpoint. And as for why there are less women s games on TV. They simply don t get the same ratings as men s games. It s a business decision again. It doesn t make sense to show games that get worse ratings. They try to show the women s games with the most interest, but they realize it doesn t make sense to show games that get bad Shoesmoncler Coffee Cowskin Low Men Casual Shoes ratings. Connecticut is a very odd state in terms of women s basketball viewers mainly because there actually are viewers.
