|The lure of lesbians The event was supposedly inspired by word that the honchos at Channel Seven had axed a lesbian smooch scene in an episode of the perhaps not so Mens Moncler Jackets Cheap squeaky clean soap Home Away to air last night. Cue outcry from liberated left over perceived pandering to the uptight right and general lesbian discussion at BT HQ (I ll spare you the details) and this pondering from the production desk. A natural question for a news agent constantly thinking about ratings, audience demands and information presentation, the subject is also a vital link to the myriad sexually political issues related to this incident. Now, had he been a lesbian, or gay at least, it s probable that Mr Producer might have framed his thoughts differently. Indeed, he might have been moved to protest about the male dominated commercial media s objectification of women in general and lesbians in particular. Perhaps he might extend this argument with a diatribe criticising mainstream Australia s continued exploitation of women and minority groups for the sake of the corporate dollar and capitalist machine. He might have also twisted his knickers over the fact a major national culture filter was actively promoting anti lesbian activity by deeming such "controversial" behaviour "unfit" for family time tele. ( Won t somebody think of the children! screams Reverend Lovejoy s neo con and likely closet lesbian wife). Or he could have given a professional appraisal of the situation without entering into the socio political quagmire and put it down to business the business of ratings. Of creating and maintaining advertising revenue. Of keeping a wobbly company afloat in times of pending doom. It wasn t personal, Moncler Down Coats Men Hooded Mid-Length Silver it was profit. But should it matter whether it was right or wrong? And who decides? Fact is, I m sure the ratings of this tired but true sitcom would have benefited as word of ladies locking lips seeped through the Australian media channels, social grapevines and blogospere. Sex sells sexy women in particular and sexy women being sexy with each other is a surefire way to widen your audience (we ve discussed lesbian appeal on the blog before) and heighten awareness of the show/series/station among eyeballs. So the curious join the casuals and the committed to view the spectacle/tune out for a while/get their daily fix and drama director goes home happy. But is the rest of the country? City, Birmingham has already canvassed this issue in his bloggy thing. And as I said to him in a state of righteous indignation, I personally would refuse to watch the H episode in question just on general principle. Mel from Kochie n Mel, Fifi Box, Jennifer Hawkins, Chris Bath what reads the news. Hmmmm, the more I think about it, what right do Channel 7 have to do this? It s a civil rights issue. Re the last point raised by the depraved mouth breathers at the sports desk two and a half words. Portia de Rossi. Phwoarrr! On the Home and Away issue "gay" is still not mainstream and IMHO it is only the X and Y generations that really have opened their minds and realised that a persons sexuality (generally) is no reflection on them as a person. the oldies probably dont get it and I assume they are also a major viewing segment of H so advertising and ratings revenue was the winner. On the more interesting topic, from your sportsdesk. great question, although I m happy for the hot guys to be gay and the ugly girls to be lesbians. it leaves more hot straight girls for us not so hot straight guys. interesting topic though. Maybe it s just that hot gay guys are more feminine and image/body conscious as a result, and not so hot lesbian women don t fit/reject the gender stereotype and take less care with image (I m GENERALISING about camp men and butch women here people before you rip me to pieces). I would also suggest (ready for the real controversy.) that some lesbian women aren t really gay, they just can t find a man to accept them, so hook up with another women (who is more understanding, sensitive and in the same boat) to make them both feel better I would suggest further that these particular women are the not so hot ones. I ll prepare for the backlash now. Another interesting and related question I have is why there seems to be a whole lot more gay men than women? I know/know of a heap of gay men at work and in my extended social circles but I couldn t name one lesbian. Brazen just asked why there aren t as many lesbians as gay men. Maybe there s less social acceptance of lesbians (H failure to show a little lesbian kiss a prime example), so while there aren t fewer gay Moncler Cardigan women, they re perhaps not as visible socially as gay men. Maybe they re just less flamboyant, or less easily parodied (do lesbians have an obvious lisp that we associate with the stereotypical gay man?) And is it even appropriate to laugh about lesbians? Gay men seem happy enough to take a joke to a point, what about the gay sisters? The issue of gay men has been explored on TV for donkey s years. Take Degrassi High (woooh!) remember Snake? His cool, jock brother was gay, and then Snake had that whole "OMG! Am I gay too? Because he s, like, my brother?" That was the early 90s! Apart from The L Word and a couple of episodes of SATC, lesbians are pretty much ignored in mainstream pop culture, and if there is any girl on girl action, it s from 2 obviously heterosexual and of course hot women. I went to a party with some lesbians recently, and I was thinking "what the hell do you get out of that? Great conversation?" Surely they need implements to get over the line? I didn t ask, I probably could have. Frankly I feel more comfortable talking about gay sex to a gay man than I do to a gay woman. I wonder if that s a gender thing hetero guys aren t exactly running out to see Brokeback Mountain (but then we accuse them of closet gayness for not doing so), but nor am I interested in knowing the intricacies of lesbianism. Hypocrite? Closet lesbian? More gender based doublestandards? i have no issue with women kissing on tv, if they re good looking, more of it i say. what i do find fascinating, is how shows like big brother etc, which are meant to portray a snap shot of society, seem to over represent gay s/lesbians in the community. my immediate circle doesn t include 20 30% gay. yet the make up of big brother contestants would have us believe this is the norm. i think they just try and ram this attitude down the throat of the rest of us. another case of the vocal minority getting their way over the silent majority perhaps. to pick up on another of your points , "Indeed, he might have been moved to protest about the male dominated commercial media s objectification of women in general and lesbians in particular." i think, if anything, the current state of advertising objectifies men. we are portrayed as simplistic, idiotic, clumsy and generally incapable. how many adds on tv now, show a man being upstaged, insulted or berated by a woman, or shown as being totally incapable without a womans input?? As i live in melbourne, i ve been reading some of the letters sent into some of the News Limited publications ugh . The argument from their readers are mostly that two women kissing is not natural and that children viewing the episode may see that kind of behaviour as natural and right .

The Man Behind the House When most people hear the name "Dior," their minds wander to the world s largest fashion house, not to the man who created it. The story of Monsieur Dior is one of an amazing creative genius who spans the first half of the 20th century, and whose impact on modern fashion rivals that of Coco Chanel herself. As a young child in 1910, Christian s family moved to Paris with the hopes that he would train to be a diplomat. It seemed fate had other plans in store for him, since from an early age he sold sketches of local Parisian fashion to people who traveled Moncler Down Men Jackets Rod Rabbit Hats Deep Blue by his house. During the late 1920s, with a grant from his father, Dior started the well known gallery Dior Freres, located in Saint Germain des Pr At the gallery, Dior sold the works of famous artists like Pablo Picasso. Sadly, when the financial crisis of the American Great Depression hit Paris, the gallery closed its doors to the public. 1940 saw Dior drafted into the French army, but little is known about the two years he spent in military service. The fall of Paris in 1942 saw Dior leave the Army and return to the city of his youth. He joined fashion designer Lucien Lelong in an effort to keep the French fashion industry alive during the war. As Dior struggled under the artistic and economic pressures of World War II, during his time as an employee of Lelong he designed couture dresses for the wives of important Nazis. According to his long time associate Alexis, Baron de Rede, it was these relationships with the wives of Nazi officers that allowed Christian to aid the French Resistance, by passing along information he gained by these relationships to his sister, Catherine Dior. Catherine was a member of the French Resistance. She was captured by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp for her activities until the liberation of France in 1945. Christmas came early for Dior in the year following the liberation of France by the Allied Forces, as Marcel Boussac, a cotton magnate, funded the creation of Christian s fashion house. As House Dior Moncler Puffer Jacket opened its doors to the public, Carmel Snow the editor in chief of Harper s Bazaar fell madly in love with his 1947 collection, calling it the "New Look." His first collection was Correlle, literally translated as "Circle of Flower Petals" in English. In rebellion against the rationing placed on fabrics during the war, Dior s designs were voluptuous. He is credited with bringing percale fabrics into Moncler Men Goose Down Hooded Black Jackets the fore front of Parisian designs. Percale has a thread count of 200 or higher, and is a blend of 50% cotton and 50% polyester. As a synthetic fabric, it was long looked down upon until Dior used it in his designs. Christian displayed a clear mastery of silhouettes in his designs by utilizing classic fashion elements like petticoats, bodices and wasp waisted corsets in new bold ways that gave his models a very curvaceous form. Following in the footsteps of fellow Parisian fashion designer Coco Chanel, Dior launched a perfume called Miss Dior Parfum in honor of his sister Catherine. With the introduction of the Dior perfume line, Christian expanded his operation internationally by introducing licensing agreements. Through Jacques Rouet, Dior s general manager at the helm of the new licensing, the newly established "Christian Dior" trademark became visible on everything from gloves, handbags, jewelry and scarves. According the French Chamber of Commerce, by 1950 Dior s fashion house made up over 75% of the Paris fashion industry and 5% of France s national fashion exports. Following his death in 1957 from his third heart attack, the fashion house Dior had worked so hard at establishing was on the verge of shutting down. Under intense pressure from Dior licensees, the French fashion industry, and finally the government of France itself, General Manager Jacques promoted, an unknown 21 year old designer named Yves Saint Laurent to the post of Creative Director. Hired by Christian Dior himself shortly before his death as his Head Assistant, Yves had been trained to craft clothing with an eye toward meticulous details and perfect proportions. Saint Laurent made his own unique impression to the House of Dior by introducing softer, easier to wear designs.
